Pool (No Water)
by Mark Ravenhill
Directed by Danny Partington
A double bill alongside Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
A famous artist invites her old friends to her luxurious new home. For one night only, the group is back together. But celebrations come to an abrupt end when the host suffers an horrific accident. As the victim lies in a coma, an almost unthinkable plan starts to take shape: could her suffering be their next work of art? Pool (No Water) is a visceral and shocking play about the fragility of friendship and the jealousy and resentment inspired by success.
Background
“Pool (No Water)” by Mark Ravenhill premiered in Plymouth in September 2006. In 2013, director Danny chose it as the first full length play he ever directed at University. Therefore, to honour the anniversary, Pool (No Water) is getting the full Marauders’ treatment.
It’s a play that focuses on professional jealousy, self worth, guilt vs vindication, and at its heart, a group of artists trying to tear down their successful colleague and (supposed) friend.
The Marauders are pushing this one step further- with their all male cast portraying the struggling artists, but the successful artist at the center of their hatred being portrayed by a woman- just how do the echo chambers of modern society make men feel simultaneously superior and inferior, and feed into toxic/hyper masculinity?
