Metamorphoses

A double bill alongside Mark Ravenhill’s Pool (No Water)

Metamorphoses is a playful new piece of theatre inspired by Ovid’s powerful collection of myths.

From the everyday to the astonishing, and the ordinary to the unimaginable, Ovid’s stories explore the power of transformation, the resilience of humans, and the wonder of life. They were a great inspiration to Shakespeare, and over 2000 years later are reimagined. Expect anarchy, shape shifting and a burning chariot of fire.

“We are here to make sense of it all!”

Background

The Metamorphoses is a Latin narrative poem from 8 CE by the Roman poet Ovid. It is considered his magnum opus. The poem chronicles the history of the world from its creation to the deification of Julius Caesar in a mythico-historical framework comprising over 250 myths, 15 books, and 11,995 lines.

Director Danny studied these works at university, and some of them were adapted by The Globe in London during lockdown. Inspired by this, Danny adapted several other myths which focused on individuals being torn down for hubris, jealousy, vengeance… making them perfect for this double bill.
